Dead but dancing describes the state immediately after your body has officially resigned. It stepped down, effective at once. The legs never received the notice. Body says Sunday, dancefloor says Saturday, and on this particular question the dancefloor holds the majority. It isn't a fight, it's a dispute about jurisdiction.
The retraction is almost always triggered by the same event: the DJ puts on that one track and the resignation is withdrawn. No negotiation, no explanation, no consultation. Which track it will be is known in advance by nobody, DJ included. You can watch half a floor change its mind in the same second.
Real exhaustion looks different, and the difference is easy to feel. Dead but dancing still has thirst, orientation and a sense of the room. If one of those is gone, what follows is a pause and not the next track. Everybody knows that line best for himself, and it doesn't get argued about here. Ten minutes at the edge cost nothing and usually bring you back. The phrase is a joke about the body, never a recommendation to ignore it.

Body: no. Head: no. Legs: apparently yes. We know the order and build the set to match. Water is within reach, and so is a corner where standing still is the whole plan.
