Gay time is a unit of measurement with very little connection to the clock. A time gets named, and what is meant is the start of a preparation that the naming itself sets in motion. The term describes a lag everybody involved knows about and nobody mentions.
How It Runs
The announcement: "We'll be there at 23:00." Said with full conviction and, in that moment, honestly meant. At 23:00 the first deviation is booked in: shower. At 00:17 comes the message "On our way", sent from the sender's own flat while a third pair of trousers is under discussion in the background. Both statements are true. They simply refer to different universes.
Not Rudeness, a System
The misreading assumes somebody is being careless with other people's time. He is not. Gay time applies inside your own group, is known on both sides and gets priced in: hear 23:00, plan for 00:30, arrive relaxed. Friction only appears where one side does not know the unit.
The lag has a reason as well. For a lot of people, getting ready is not a run-up to the evening, it is already the evening: playlist, outfit change, pre-drinks, the question of whether the look is meant for the floor or for the route there. Cut that and you save an hour and lose half the night. That a time still gets named at all is part of the ritual.
AT TWINK DEATH
When you turn up makes no difference to us. The night is long, the line-up is long, and nobody keeps an attendance list. The closing tile records the result: "Estimated arrival: conceptual." If you want the warm-up, though, expect the clock at the floor to be the ordinary one.
