What Is a Warm-up Set?

WARM-UP Sound Entry 35 of 63

The warm-up is the opening set of a night. Its job is not to play the same music at a lower volume — it is to build a room. Over an hour or two, an empty floor and a handful of people at the bar turn into an audience that is ready for what follows.

The Most Underrated Slot of the Night

Among DJs this counts as one of the hardest jobs going. Outside the booth it gets filed under beginner work. The difference lies in what isn't there yet: no full floor holding things up, no expectation already sitting in the room, no reaction to steer by.

Go into full construction too early and you burn the climb of the entire evening. Hide instead and the room stays cold. The actual craft lives between those two: temperature up, energy up, tension up, and everything still to come left possible.

How to Tell One Is Working

  • The floor fills without anybody being asked to come over.
  • Tempo climbs in small steps rather than in jumps.
  • The big records don't arrive, and you don't miss them.
  • By the end the room is warmer than it ought to be and nobody can say exactly when that happened.

AT TWINK DEATH

The night does not start at three. Turn up only for the supposedly best part and you walk into a room other people built for you, having missed the stretch where it was decided how the whole thing goes. No beginning, no peak. That isn't a plea, it's a description of the mechanics.

"Respect the opener. Come early."

Come early. The rest follows on its own.

  • B2B — openings, too, are often played by two people.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a warm-up in a club?

The warm-up is the first DJ set of a night. It builds mood, tempo and tension to a point where the later sets have something to stand on.

Is a warm-up just quieter peak time?

No. It follows an arc of its own and deliberately keeps something in reserve. Spend everything early and you take the climb away from the rest of the evening.

Does warm-up mean the same thing as in sport?

Only as an analogy. Nobody is stretching. What gets warmed up is the room, and the person doing the work is the DJ.
