Top usually describes someone who prefers the insertive role during sex. It names a preference, not a personality, and it holds as a tendency rather than a rule without exceptions. Plenty of men move between roles depending on the night and the man in front of them, and never bother updating the word in their profile.
A Word Built for Shorthand
The term lives where people have to sort each other out fast: apps, profiles, a half-shouted exchange at the bar. One syllable does the work of a paragraph and spares everyone the preamble. That efficiency is also the ceiling. Shorthand can carry a preference; it cannot carry a person, and nobody owes you a footnote explaining why the label reads differently this month than it did last.
Position or personality — the word only answers the first, and it only becomes legible next to Bottom anyway. The two define each other and very little beyond that. Everything people actually want to know about a stranger sits in the space the shorthand skips.
Top Is Not Dom
The most common misreading hides in a silent equation: whoever tops also leads. Position and power dynamic run on separate tracks. One describes what happens physically.
