What Is Aftercare?

AFTERCARE Consent Entry 21 of 63

Aftercare is the attention and mutual care that follows an intense experience. Talking, water, space, closeness, checking in again the next day: what belongs to it is decided by the people involved. The term comes out of BDSM, where it describes what happens after a scene rather than what ends one.

There Is No Correct Version, Only a Stated One

Because it looks so different from one person to the next, aftercare fails most reliably when it is silently expected. One wants to talk the night through, the other wants quiet. One needs an hour of physical contact, the other twenty minutes alone and a cigarette. Both are aftercare. It only goes wrong when someone guesses instead of asking, and a single sentence beforehand settles it far more easily than a negotiation afterwards, when everybody is spent.

What it is not is a promise about later. Coming down together commits nobody to a number, a breakfast or a second meeting. That expectation is also better said early than quietly assumed.

Drop Does Not Mean Something Went Wrong

The second misreading is that aftercare is for the person who was led. Whoever held control has also been somewhere out of the ordinary. Intense experiences are sometimes followed by a low, known in the scene as drop, which can arrive hours later or the next day and says nothing about whether the experience was good. That is why the message tomorrow counts as much as the glass of water tonight.

AT TWINK DEATH

After a long night, the way back down is often the harder part. Say what you need and ask what the other person needs. Something to drink, somewhere to sit, getting warm, a few minutes out of the noise: usually that is all of it. This is not an add-on service, it is the rest of the same evening.

Care isn't uncool.

Our Awareness Team is around for this part of the night as well. If you would rather not be alone after an intense situation, they are approachable and will not ask you to justify it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is aftercare?

Aftercare is the mutual attention that follows an intense experience. It can be a conversation, water and a blanket, or simply being left in peace for a while.

Is aftercare only for the sub?

No. Whoever was leading is coming out of an exceptional situation too. It runs in both directions, even if usually only one side gets talked about.

How long does aftercare last?

There is no fixed duration. Sometimes it is ten minutes in a quieter room, sometimes a message the next day. Neither version is the incomplete one.
